Travel Sentry Standards

Travel Sentry creates and manages standards that improve travel security in cooperation with government security agencies, airlines, airports and the travel goods industry.

Recognized and Accepted

Travel Sentry® Approved locks are officially recognized and accepted by the US Department of Homeland Security's Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and by Security and Customs agencies around the world.

Used Wordwide

The Travel Sentry luggage security system is in use at hundreds of airports around the world. The system has been implemented at every U.S. airport including overseas territories such as the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Guam, and Micronesia.

How it works

Travel Sentry® Approved locks and luggage enable airport security officers to open luggage for physical inspection when required without the need to cut off or break open locks. This means that passenger luggage can be left securely locked for the entire trip and not delayed or damaged for security inspection.
Travel Sentry does not manufacture locks or luggage and does not sell any products. Rather, Travel Sentry sets the standards for this system in cooperation with governments and partnership with the luggage and lock industry. Travel Sentry manages the system for participating governments and provides the necessary tools, training and ongoing support.

Industry Licensing

Travel Sentry welcomes manufacturers and distributors who are able to meet Travel Sentry's quality standards.

There are three types of required Travel Sentry licenses:

Licensed OEM Lock Manufacturers: Travel Sentry sets standards for TSA Locks to ensure that:

  • Each lock design meets the operational needs of the TSA and other security agencies.
  • Each lock design meets minimum standards for security and quality including key cuts, cylinder design and more.

Licensed OEM Luggage Manufacturers: Travel Sentry also sets standards to ensure that:

  • Correct placement of the TSA LOCK® to meet operational needs of the TSA and other security agencies.
  • The Travel Sentry Red Diamond and other trademarks are correctly presented.

Licensed Distributors: Travel Sentry standards require that:

  • All references and descriptions of the TSA LOCK® system are consistent with our agreements with the TSA, other governments and security agencies.
  • The Travel Sentry Red Diamond and other trademarks are correctly presented.

Any company interested in manufacturing Travel Sentry® Approved locks or luggage or to distribute products with the Travel Sentry trademark is required to get a license.

The Travel Sentry organization was created in 2003 in cooperation with leading luggage and accessory manufacturers working with the TSA.

Travel Sentry® exists to solve the two conflicting needs of the traveling public and the Security Agencies. Most people want their property to be secure when they travel and that means locking their luggage. The Security Agencies need to be able to get into baggage if physical inspection is required and prefers not to cut off or break open locks. Travel Sentry makes this happen by providing approved solutions that mean that baggage can stay locked and protected!
